What is Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy?

Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy is a talking therapy practice.   The process involves talking to a professionally trained practitioner, whose aim is to assist you make sense of things that are troubling you and to help you make changes in the ways you deal with life situations and your difficulties.

There are many different methods and techniques in psychotherapy.  Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy assists you to resolve difficulties by increasing awareness of your inner world and its influence over your current relationships and life situations.  I assist my clients to explore their past history, developmental mile stones and experiences and to grow a better understanding of the root causes of any difficulties.

The emotional awareness is said to be the highest form of intelligence and I assist my clients to develop greater awareness and understanding of their conscious and unconscious motives and drives.   I provide you support in your task should you wish to change or develop any aspects of yourself, or simply to align your understanding of your behaviour with your sense of self.

Psychotherapy may be sought at times of difficulties but many of my clients go on to continue with therapy after the crisis resolution because they find the process beneficial and advantageous in developing and improving themselves, their relationships, and their circumstances.  Some of my clients have gone to achieve great professional and personal success following psychotherapy and personal development meetings with me.

How does it work?

The professional relationship between you and your psychotherapist is significant in helping you deal with difficulties by understanding and working through them at an emotional level.   The experience should provide an opportunity to revisit past experiences, re-evaluate how these have shaped your life and continue to influence present feelings, actions, and relationships, and to help expand emotional intelligence and self-knowledge.

Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy can be especially useful in helping people with long term or recurring problems getting to the root of their difficulties and, through understanding, to change destructive ways of relating to themselves and to others.

Therapy can continue for one or several years to improve health and for personal development; or may last short term with a focus on crisis resolution and problem management.  The frequency and number of sessions depend on the nature and extent of the difficulties and availability.   Usually sessions are held once or twice a week, but can occur less frequently.  The terms of therapy are best negotiated in a first meeting, as each person’s requirements are unique to their circumstances, aims and objectives.
